Since its founding in 1776, Montgomery County, Maryland has been served by various federal, state, regional and municipal law enforcement agencies. At the 2012 annual meeting of The Montgomery County Police Alumni Association, Inc. ("MCPAA"), Karl Plitt proposed the creation of a museum to preserve and display artifacts from those law enforcement agencies. After discussion, the MCPAA began exploring that idea. Over the next several years and with the cooperation of the Montgomery County Police Department, the Sheriff's Office and Peerless Rockville, the Red Brick Courthouse (pictured below) was identified as the best location for the museum. In 2016 The Montgomery County Joint Law Enforcement Museum, Inc. was chartered as a non-profit 501c3 corporation and work began in earnest to establish the museum there.
Today, we are still negotiating with county officials to lease some of the vacant space in the historic courthouse where both the Sheriff's office and the original MCPD headquarters were located. We have already collected a number of artifacts and exhibit cases for the museum, come up with a design for the space in the courthouse, formed our Board of Directors and organized our initial "core" volunteers.
This website was initially created to inform the public about the museum, to recruit additional volunteers, and to assist the volunteers by providing a central point for sharing information, photos, diagrams and documents. It has been updated to include the new on-line shop and ability to receive donations on-line.
We have been busy planning, recruiting and collecting. How will you get involved?
The museum will be located in the historic Red Brick Courthouse, 29 Courthouse Square, Rockville, Maryland. The primary display area will be in Room 105 which was the Sheriff's office and the location of the first office of the Montgomery County Police Department. Additional displays will be placed in the main hallway between Room 105 and the offices of Peerless Rockville.
The photos below were taken in and around the Red Brick Courthouse.
We anticipate that sometime in the near future there will be various social media accounts for our museum. Links to those accounts will appear here.
